SPECT (single positron emission computed tomography) is another type of nuclear medicine examination. SPECT uses a gamma camera which can rotate, and computer reconstruction similar to PET. In some cases, PET may be more sensitive than SPECT, but PET scanners are much more costly than SPECT scanners and are often only available in the largest medical centers. PET scanning is a type of nuclear medicine scanning that involves cross sectional data acquisition and reconstruction much like Computed Tomography (CT) scanning. PET scanning has specific potential in imaging certain diseases and disorders of the brain (for example brain tumors) and the heart. Lung cancer imaging is a new, emerging application of PET and involves inhalation of the radionuclide, rather than oral or intravenous administration. Demand for this technology has been created by accelerated progress in decoding the human genome, development of transgenic mice, and rapid proliferation of small animal models of human disease. A PET (positron emmission tomography) scan is an imaging technique that uses positively charged particles (radioactive positrons) to detect subtle changes in the body's metabolism and chemical activities. A PET scan provides an image of the body's function rather than its structure.

The PET scanner is a ring-shaped apparatus with an attached table. You will lie on the scanning table, and the table will slide slowly through the opening in the scanner ring. During the scanning procedure, you must lie very still. If your head is being scanned, special cushions may be used to hold your head in place. A PET scan may be used to evaluate patients with cancer, brain diseases or cardiac illnesses. During a PET scan, a substance called a tracer, that produces radioactive positrons, is injected into a vein. This tracer is typically a chemical that is normally found in the body (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen) that has been altered to allow it to emit positrons. Once the tracer enters the body, it travels through the bloodstream to a specific target organ. Once there, the tracer emits positrons, which collide with electrons (negatively charged particles), producing gamma rays (similar ot X-rays). These gamma rays are detected by a ringed-shaped PET scanner and analyzed by a computer to form an image of the target organ's metabolism or other functions. PET scanning is being used with a high degree of accuracy to ensure that cancer patients get the proper course of treatment. PET is also breaking ground in the evaluation of diseases of the heart and brain.
