The invention of at least 112 such machines preceded the successful Remington typewriter. Many of the early designs received patents, and several were marketed on a limited basis. The first such patent was issued to Henry Mill, an English engineer, in 1714. The first primitive American machine was patented in 1829 by William Burt of Detroit. Then in 1868, American inventor Christopher Latham Sholes developed the machine that finally succeeded on the market as the Remington and established the modern idea of the typewriter. The main design however, with the forward folding carriage remained the same through the decades. Unchanged also remained the way the serial number of each machine was clumsily scratched into the underside of the carriage, although it was also neatly printed on the inside of the rear panel.

An older looking typewriter, with an aluminum frame--but basically the same machine. The company changed the name to Corona in 1910, and a typewriter legend was born. 700,000 were made in all from 1910 to 1940. Some were painted bright colors. All were made to be kept in their cases... one of the reasons why so many have survived in such good condition. The Folding Corona is sometimes called the Corona 3, which was its original model number (No. 1 & 2 were models of the Standard Folding). It is one of the most-common collectible typewriters, found at flea markets everywhere.
